NWC's Non Revenue Water Management in the Kingston and St. Andrew Area 

In his role of Vice President, Investment and Performance Monitoring at the National Water Commission (NWC), Mr. Vernon Barrett assists the Commission's President in administering and guiding the critical operations pertaining to the viability and effectiveness of the NWC. His portfolio includes managing the development of the Commission's Public/Private Partnership programme and engagements with Multilateral Agencies, ensuring the Commission's performance is maintained in line with key benchmark indicators, and managing the Information & Communications Technology systems of the Commission to ensure responsiveness to the requirements of internal and external customers. 

 

Water provided by the NWC is largely categorized into two groups: 1) Revenue: water provided to paying customers; and 2)a. Non Revenue: water provided to socially challenged communities at a flat rate regardless of the amount of water actually used; and 2)b. Water lost via leaks along/beneath the road ways, and along the pipe lines of the paying customer(s). 

 

As part of its drive to lessen water lost via leaks, the Commission is presently working in tandem with contractors for the road works in the Kingston and St. Andrew region to replace old and/or dysfunctional water pipes and valves beneath the road surfaces. An element of the Commission's  operational functions includes dispatch teams which examine the pipelines along and/or beneath the roadways with special sounding devices in search of leaks. Once identified, suspected leaks are tagged for closer examination and repair as required. Revenue customers, that is, paying customers of the Commission are encouraged to use the water provided through their pipelines with care and consideration, as it is a precious commodity provided at a cost.

 

At this meeting,  the Rotary Club of St. Andrew had the pleasure of hosting three young ladies from the Rotaract Club of the University of the West Indies, Mona.
